Diversity in Science

In 2014, the Royal Society awarded just two University Research Fellowships (URF) to women, whilst 41 men received the funding which allows young scientists to build the beginnings of their independent research career. This is equivalent to one in 20 women – a drastic decrease since 2010, when one in three women were awarded Fellowships – this is despite 19% of the applications being from females.


Late last year, five third year biologists from the University of Sheffield explored the idea of introducing quotas into these schemes to allow for gender equality, interviewing several academics from the department of Animal and Plant Sciences.
