Professor Sunetra Gupta: scientist, novelist, essayist (& mother of two!)

The APSFemwork has been counting down the days until we meet Prof. Sunetra Gupta! Sunetra is Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at Oxford University's Department of Zoology. Her work involves using mathematical modelling to understand the processes of infectious diseases, including the population structure of pathogens and host immunity. For her scientific achievements she was awarded the Royal Society Rosalind Franklin Award in 2009.

When she’s not testing hypotheses in the lab, Sunetra is a lover of literature and herself an acclaimed novelist and essayist. Her list of literary prizes is testament to her popularity in the literary world. On top of all this, Sunetra manages to juggle a husband and two daughters.

Her love of science grew as a child from a yearning to discover how things work. Growing up, Sunetra moved around a lot, having lived in Calcutta, Ethiopia, Zambia and England where she currently works at her post at Oxford University.

The more we read about Sunetra Gupta, the more we’re struck in equal parts with awe and admiration. To be successful in the field of Science or Art requires passion and dedication, so to conquer both realms is an amazing feat. Sunetra is the perfect model to show that if you are truly passionate about something, there is nothing to stop you! Sunetra has spoken in the past on how she juggles such an eventful career, so if you’re interested in knowing more see the links here and here. Sunetra has also spoken for BBC Radio Four, a brilliant show on the fusion of science and literary art – you can listen online here.

Join us on April 20th for what we think will be an exhilarating talk on Sunetra’s life and establishing her career. See you all there! Where: BMS Conference Room When: Monday April 20th, 5-6pm
